The Importance of Teaching History

Teaching history is vital because it serves as a bridge between the past and the present, offering lessons that shape our future. By studying the actions of individuals like Augusta Chiwy—a nurse who risked her life to save others during World War II—students gain insight into the power of individual agency, even amidst chaos. History teaches us not just what happened, but why it matters: it reveals the consequences of courage and apathy, the strength of unity over division, and the enduring impact of compassion. In a world facing complex challenges, understanding history equips students with the wisdom to navigate uncertainty, the perspective to challenge injustice, and the inspiration to act with purpose. The Augusta Chiwy Foundation believes that by illuminating these stories, we empower students to build a more just and empathetic society.
